The seeds of Tuan's "humanistic geography"

After reading Yi-Fu Tuan's "Space and Place: The Perspective of Experience," delving into "Topophilia" is a bit like stepping backward in the philosopher's evolution of thought. There are astounding passages of wisdom here, about the nature of human experience as it relates to the environment -- interspersed, sometimes jarringly, with related histories and descriptions. The seeds of Tuan's "humanistic geography" are here, but are not as philosophically compelling as the mature synthesis found in "Space and Place."

It would be a mistake, however, to view Tuan's more mature work as superceding this volume. "Topophilia" is full of amazing sensitivity and insight, and key to gaining a deep and useful understanding of the author's philosophy. This book's emphasis on the conventional 'environment' is also significantly different from the broader notions 'space and place' explored in the later work of that name. Both works are seminal.

To the philosopher, artist, and psychologist, I would recommend reading "Space and Place" before this book. To the geographer and especially the environmentalist, however, Topophilia's particular focus may be a more enticing place to start.

Not so deep

This is considered one of the most important essays among geographers, and being a geographer myself, i actually thought of this book (before buying it) as the one everyone involved in this subject should read.
I have to say that while it is very well written, poetic and strong it doesn't really add anything specific to the community. I found it just a collection of many themes and ideas touched and developed by others in the past. Don't get me wrong, the book is beautiful and thanks to its fluidity it's a pleasure to read it, but it is more of a global vision of things .

ROY F. BAUMEISTER directs the social psychology program at Florida State University. He has written more than 450 scientific publications and consistently ranks among the world’s most frequently cited psychologists.

whatever you would like to call it

Roy Baumeister's Willpower was an enjoyable book, and fascinating for what it says about us as human beings. The most fascinating point is this. Willpower, self-control, free-will, whatever you would like to call it, is a relative capacity, and it is more or less controlled by certain features of our physiology, and it is particularly tied to glucose. Think of glucose in the body as the fuel that lets you run, or gives you self-control or free will. When this fuel gets burned up through the activities you engage in throughout your day, your level of self-control decreases. You make bad or hasty decisions, you get angry at a loved one, you don't do something as well as you should have, etc. And it's all because you are burning up the fuel that powers your body. The book is very good and practical about what to do to avoid your depletion of self-control, and it involves getting a reasonable amount of sleep and eating well throughout your day. 'Well' in 'eating well' is the operative word, by the way, because what gives your body a good dose of glucose that will serve your body best is healthy food that contains sugars but that does not just give your body a quick dose of sugar. Things like energy drinks, for instance, can increase your glucose levels, but they also cause a big crash because these are the kinds of sugars that burn quickly. Slow-burning sugars are the ticket. The book also gives other practical advice about kinds of exercises you can do throughout your day to increase your willpower. Perhaps it's a truism, but one easy way is setting clear goals, sticking with a standard to meet those goals, and rewarding yourself for the big and little goals met proportionate to the size of the goals are all ways you can maintain adequate levels of self-control and not use too much energy worrying or involved in trivial matters. Pretty good book.

This explains a lot....

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As someone who is constantly striving to improve my willpower and self-discipline, I read this book with keen interest. However, this book gave me the most unexpected insight - why I hate shopping SO much! I avoid it, I procrastinate, I just go without even if I am perfectly able to afford the item I need.

Whenever I go to the mall I feel absolutely drained and miserable, while my bargain hunting mother and sister absolutely thrive off it. Here's the reason - making decisions about what items to buy requires will power and drains energy! It's something called decision fatigue.

The author presents a disturbing case study in which parole judges would be multiple times more likely to grant parole for prisoners they reviewed earlier in the day than later in the day. By the end of the day they were too tired to go through all the effort to review the info and make a good decision so they just erred on the side of caution!

The overall message of the book is that we have a finite store of daily willpower. We use that same store for everything that requires will power, from going to the gym to finishing a difficult report. Willpower requires energy, specifically glucose, which is why it is important to refuel a bit before attempting something difficult. On a positive note, willpower can be strengthened and expanded with practice. Small successes build our confidence and ultimately our willpower - a concept known as self-efficacy.

However, If you are trying to make lifestyle changes you have a greater chance of success by attempting one thing at a time. This approach allows you to concentrate our willpower on a new activity until it becomes habit and no longer requires much willpower.

Bottom line - it's a really fun read and you might learn a few things about yourself along the way.

This book is not what one would or might imagine. It's not a traditional self-help book that'll get you no where and hardly ever work. This one is filled with simple and many studies that can be very surprising and very easy to understand. Surprisingly enough, glucose depletion severely lowers our ability to exercise self-control. A studied and true, and for me, new concept.

A main premise of this book is why and how self-control, self-regulation or monitoring can be learned. That virtually anything from deciding where to eat, what movie to watch, or even which road to take depletes our willpower. Considering that we start the day with a certain amount of willpower, each little decision or even deciding not to decide, depletes energy and thus willpower. worldwide studies have been conducted on all these concepts. Many results surprised the researchers. Many old but tried and true adages have been shown to work. A good breakfast is really the most important meal of the day! It's true. It's been studied, tested and has been found to work. Starting with a full tank of glucose is critical and more important, easy.

Once started on self-control, in any area, eventually will become a habit. No more decisions to make on that one. Self-control, having been created in one aspect of life tends to generalize across others. Habits finally enable us to dispense with most decision making, lowering stress, expending less effort, reserving more willpower for those more critical decisions that we encounter less frequently.

I've a MS in psychology, and what I've learned from this book amazes me! This, to me, is a must read and we'll worth the small cost. I'll be reading it again. I'm hoping you'll give it an earnest try. You won't be disappointed.

About the Author

Sandra Opdycke

Sandra Opdycke is the associate director of the Institute for Innovation in Social Policy at Vassar College. A student of Mark Carnes, she received her Ph.D. from Columbia in 1995 and has lectured and written extensively on urban history, women's history and public health, including No One Was Turned Away: The Role of Public Hospitals in New York City Since 1900 (Oxford, 1999) and The Routledge Historical Atlas of Women in America (Routledge, 2000). She has also contributed 70 essays to American National Biography (Oxford, 1999), which was edited by authors John A. Garraty and Mark Carnes.

Addams' Inspiring Journey

If you would have mentioned the name “Jane Addams” three weeks ago, my response would’ve been a confused, “What?” After reading her biography by Sandra Opdycke, I ask myself, “What not?”

Addams, often regarded as the mother of social work, did everything; from founding one of the first settlement houses in the U.S. - Hull-House - and empowering women globally to her international attempts to bring peace, she contributed to many major social issues. And although she had experienced personal failure and tragedy earlier in life, she later succeeded in helping herself, her neighbors, and the world.

Good Book: Easy to Read/View

This book was an easy read and very informative. There are so many nuances in art these days so it was helpful to see information with a lot of pictures. It would be great if you could go into a little more detail about serigraphs. I am sure I will be referring to this over and over again as I move forward in my current career.

About the Author
Ronna Magy has been an ESL adult educator for nearly three decades. She currently serves as ESL Teacher Advisor for LAUSD's Division of Adult and Career Education. Since 2000 she has been involved with Staff Development and teacher training. Ronna is the author of several ESL textbooks including US Citizen, Yes, Life Skills and Test Prep, Stories From the Heart and Beginning Stories From the Heart, and Working It Out. Ronna has been a regular presenter at adult education conferences including the Division of Adult and Career Education's Fall Conference, California Council on Adult Education, CATESOL, and TESOL since 1982. As ESL Teacher Adviser for DACE, she creates and presents workshops on a variety of ESL teaching methods and techniques including learner persistence and goal setting, cooperative learning, lesson planning, reading and writing.

Once again David Bohm, one of the most original of thinkers, has demonstrated his ability to make original and fascinating discoveries in regard to, let us say, life in general. This is a combination of physics, biology, philosophy etc etc or as it used to be called natural philosophy. Bohm was one of this century's last remaining natural philospohers in a time of specialisation, in some ways akin to Robert Rosen, Darcy Thomson or Einstein all of whom were willing to expand their frontiers beyond their areas of specialisation. What singles Bohm out is his deep investigation of all aspects of thought especially the study of thought itself, its origin and dissolution and is human life possible without it, in other words is thought all there is or does being human mean a great deal more and other ?
In this short text Bohm looks at creativity, what it is, what it means in human life, how it works and various other aspects. Bohm, like in his other works, shys away from any form of solid definition, this is done on purpose, rather than because of a lack of understanding, Bohm insists that any form of thought, concept, idea which becomes crystalised as the "whole truth and nothing but the truth" interferes with the natural flow of reality which is ever changing and never static, this includes ideas as well which are insights about this flow (expanded on earlier in eg "Wholeness and the Implicate Order"). In this book he considers something he calls artamovement or "the art of fitting in the flow", here the word fit is in fact the meaning of art, in fact all forms of human endeavour are a form of art. This fitting in is the way people find out whether something is true or right in a context.
This, as usual, is highly original and especially true to itself, Bohm always writes what is true to itself and himself, he never, right until his dying day, failed to expound the truth whether he liked it or not. He epitomises the true seaker of knowledge which today is often smothered by individual desires, political expediency, domination from others or downright egotism. He was a remarkable man.

Consisting of four essays and an interview with Louwrien Wijers, On Creativity provides a clear window into the ruminations of physicist David Bohm. Author of a textbook on quantum mechanics, Bohm is best known for his speculations on "the implicate order," a world view which draws on quantum mechanics in an attempt to go behind colleague Niels Bohr's "Copenhagen Interpretation"-to wit, that the mathematics of quantum theory, which lead to paradoxes in the macroscopic realm, should not be construed as anything more than mathematical treatments that work. This view, or rather non-view, was not acceptable to Einstein. The basic solution of Bohm is to suggest that our entire three-dimensional reality, which shows evidence of nonlocality-the instantaneous measurable correlation of attributes of distant particles-is a projection of a deeper "enfolded" realm. These essays, however, with titles such as "On creativity," "On the relationships of science and art," "The range of imagination," and "The art of perceiving movement" are not overly recondite, abstruse, or abstract-let alone mathematical. In On Creativity, for example, Bohr analyzes what makes not just a great, but a truly original scientist, such as Newton and Einstein (with whom Bohm corresponded). Perhaps surprisingly, he includes Helen Keller and her teacher Anne Sullivan in their company. The reason has to do with Bohm's emphasis on an open-minded attitude, free of worldly obsessions such as career advancement or "kicks," that allows the truly creative mind to bust through societal blinders and see the world as a whole in a new way. In the case of Sullivan she exposed Keller, deaf and blind from birth, to water in a variety of settings, writing the word on her hand. At a given point, Keller, who was animalistic before, put the different stimuli together, seeing their underlying unity. This is the kind of unity that Bohr argues Newton discovered in his realization that planets, like apples, fall-only much more slowly-a view that dispensed with the prevailing notions of the Greeks, who distinguished between the perfection of the celestial, and the imperfection of the earthly realm. Einstein went further, showing that seemingly equidistant and simultaneous times and places really depended upon the relationship of observers to observed. What is wonderful about Bohm is that he is deeply immersed in and respectful of, art and philosophy and religion. A close friend of Krishnamurti, he relates the work of Hegelian philosophy and Coleridgian poetics to scientific inquiry; he says he personally was inspired by artists. For example, in the essay, "The Range of Imagination," he attempts to link art to science by starting with Owen Barfield's analysis of Coleridge's distinction between two kinds of imagination-primary imagination and fancy. Although they are linked-mutually implicated is as everything else in Bohm's implicate universe-the primary imagination is much more than just putting things together in pleasing shapes. Perhaps the single biggest insight in this book, which everywhere battles what Bohm considers to be the deleterious effects of fragmentation (and mediocrity, conformity, and "the mechanical") in thinking, is his emphasis that, in great art, no less than great science, the truth is not necessarily what is liked. The truth is what we find *whether we like it or not*--and this scientific spirit needs to apply to art as well. In a way, however, this brilliant exposition creates a contradiction for Bohm, as he elsewhere identifies the true with the beautiful (in large part due to the aesthetic criterion of elegance for choosing among competing world views and mathematical theories). The book might also be criticized for being stylistically bland even as it sings the praises of art, as well as perhaps politically naive in tracing human malaise to an abstraction so great as "the fragmentary." Nonetheless, this work is highly recommended for its analysis of the fascinating, still woefully underexplored terrain connecting art and science.

As a favor to a friend, Yancy agrees to take a little looksee into the massacre and boom, he’s stuck in a turf war between two rival gangs, which both think he’s pinch-hitting for the other side. Oh, and there’s also a secretive dark mage with some mean ol’ magical chops and a small army of hyena-faced, body-snatching baddies. It might be time to seriously reconsider some of his life choices.

Yancy is a bluesman, a rambler, a gambler, but not much more. Sure, he can do a little magic—maybe even more than just a little magic—but he knows enough to keep his head down and stay clear of freaky-deaky hoodoo like this business in LA. Somehow though, he’s been set up to take a real bad fall—the kind of very permanent fall that leaves a guy with a toe tag. Unless, of course, he can find out who is responsible for the gangland murders, make peace in the midst of the gang feud, and take out said dark mage before he hexes Yancy into an early retirement. Easy right? Stupid. Bleeding. Heart.

Head and Shoulders above the rest of the crowd....with no dandruff! ;-)

While I haven't read this set, I've read all the books in it individually. If you're into the latest rage, Urban Fantasy, this is your cup of nitro...er....tea. Yancy is NOT your typical lightening bolt throwing kind of guy; he is plenty willing to put real bullets through the bad guys as well. The bullets may be the size of Volkswagens but they ARE still bullets.

What I really like about Yancy is that he's WAY more real than most of the heroes in the genre, although Yancy would never call himself a hero. He drinks, smokes, chases women, and has a problem with authority figures. See? Just like the rest of us. Well, except for hanging out with everything from Yetis to undead Fae and packing a wallop that would make you feel like you just got stepped on by Rhode Island.

So....if you enjoy Harry, Atticus, or any of the rest of those sissies, its time to step up and watch a Man's Man kick some demon spawn butt! You will NOT regret it.

Definitely worth purchasing

These books are character driven with a main character whose complexity, while not apparent in his dialog or self-reflection, is developed his actions and by how other characters react to him. But they are more than character driven. The main story arcs are well thought out and the action moved at a pace that kept me constantly engaged.

The books are never preachy but there is enough to think about that I felt like there was an intelligent person behind the keyboard and not a bot plugging phrases into a well-worn formula.

I purchased these books individually and really love this series. Yancy's snarky humor is excellent! The world gets bigger, and the story gets better, with every book. Don't forget to read the novellas to get Yancy's backstory. Fans of smart-mouthed wizards will really enjoy this series!
