Mystery & murder continue in The Naturals series!

I loved The Naturals series and was very happy with this final book, story, and the many heart stopping twists and turns it took! Cassie has always blamed herself for her mother's murder and she continues to try to find the killer(s) but she and her team and the FBI are also dealing with a cult that kills people (certain amounts, certain dates, etc), looking for a missing person (who one of the profilers grew up with) and interspersed with chapters narrated by YOU, which is super horrible with gore, torture, blood, death, and forces beyond YOU's control. I loved the continued "family" feeling of these naturals (they are flawed, have bad backgrounds and specialties hones to solve heinous crimes) and I liked the addition of new characters (Laurel, Celine, Kane) as the plot thickened. Barnes really knows how to write mysteries, psychological thrillers, dealing with serial killers, murderers, people gone bad and the Naturals trying to save the world one step at a time. Highly recommended, read this book & the whole series!

The first Jennifer Lynn Barnes book that isn't amazing

Barnes has been the gold standard for nearly perfect, seemingly effortless YA for years. Her silence of the lambs meets x-men meets high school "Naturals" series, in particular, has been brilliantly executed entertainment on every level. Page turners of the highest order. So it is with some sadness that I note that the final installment in the series "Bad Blood" is just....okay. The plot isn't tight, the story goes so far off the rails that it is distracting, and the mojo is lost. We still want to know what happens, and anyone who read the first three books in the series will need to read this, but this last volumes lacks the punch and drive of her other stories, and it feels forced. Anyone as productive and amazing as JLB is entitled to a mulligan, so let's hope she returns to form in her next book, but this is disappointing.

Great series conclusion - brings everything full circle

Bad Blood is the conclusion to Jennifer Lynn Barnes’ series, The Naturals. Five teenagers with special abilities that they’ve developed because of some horror’s in their past aid the FBI in solving murders. At the beginning of the series, they only work on cold cases, but by this book, they’re working on an active case and getting entangled in some pretty awful things. I love the suspense, and I love how different this series is from many other YA books.

Each of the earlier books in the series focuses on the backstory of one of the characters, and this book reveals details about the remaining two characters. It also brings the series full circle and involves the death of Cassie’s (the main characters and narrator) mother, which is introduced in book 1. I really enjoyed how personal everything becomes throughout this series. Barnes’ is a master of bringing the reader along on an emotional rollercoaster, and this book is no exception.

A new “Natural” is introduced in this book, and while it’s clear that this series is over by the end of the book, Barnes does kind of leave it open for a possible spin-off series, which I would read in a heartbeat if she ever writes it. Her writing is so masterful. I have already reserved this first book on audio via Overdrive. I never went back to re-read the books before each new one was released, but knowing how interconnected the stories are, I now need to re-listen to the full series if I can find it.

The real thing

I have been counselling patients for more than 15 years based on what I've learned at school and at work. And I was looking for a book that would really touch the humanistic side of the patient counselling process. Thanks God, I found it.

Pippa is not reinventing the wheel for entertaining

As the sister of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, Pippa Middleton is in an unenviable situation. In many ways, she cannot win and it is unfortunate that to some, she will always be known as the only maid of honor to ever wear a flattering dress. Never judged on her own efforts, but on the media and public perception of her. Celebrate: A Year of Festivities for Families and Friends, is her attempt to change that.

Given her low profile prior to the royal wedding, Celebrate could be viewed as a premature effort. However, she's not the first person to jump on the bandwagon of her own notoriety nor will she be the last. To Pippa's credit, she acknowledges this in the introduction to Celebrate. She has the opportunity and she's taking advantage of it. By admitting this she makes it redundant for those who scoff at her efforts. Now who is being unoriginal?

Several reviews for this book have criticized Pippa for stating the obvious: 'ice goes great with drinks', 'a turkey at Christmas time is good for large gatherings'. Yes, it's true but let's be honest, even Martha Stewart falls back on 'Pumpkins add to the festive atmosphere of Halloween', 'Hearts make perfect Valentines' and 'Easter egg hunts are fun'. What Pippa does add to the field is her youth. Like her sister, she makes going the extra mile fashionable. Thus giving twenty-somethings options other than beer, wine, tortilla chips and brie cheese trays for their own parties.

Divided by seasons, Pippa presents crafts, recipes, nostalgic/traditional games and charming tidbits of trivia appropriate to the occasion. She also offers small glimpses into how her family celebrated events like Easter and Mothers Day. While her tips for building bonfires may not apply to most of her readers, some of the game instructions are hard to follow (Conker fights?) and hanging donuts from trees may be an attempt for the brave, her instructions for creating Christmas decorations and place settings using simple items can be for those willing to make the effort. Very reassuring for craft-challenged people like me.

With Celebrate, Pippa Middleton is not reinventing the wheel for entertaining. Instead her book is a fine attempt at reinterpreting it.

A failure in editing

Pippa Middleton took a lot of flack for her book, but as an editor myself, I believe that the flaw is on the editorial side. The basic set-up of the book (by seasons and traditional British events) is useful. I enjoyed the Burns Night section, plus other tidbits like how to make a "Christmas cracker."

Unfortunately, the book is bloated, with equal weight given to the mundane and the interesting. I understand that Pippa wanted to publish an accessible book, but it's almost never a good idea to talk down to the reader. Martha Stewart gets away with it because she's Martha Stewart; i.e., she has good reason to assume her readers can't live up to her example. In Pippa's case, I don't get it. Bobbing for apples, capture the flag, turkey for Christmas?

If I were editing the book, I'd suggest the following organization within sections:

* First, a simple list of the traditional British ways of doing things, without the play by play of every familiar game, decoration, or menu item. We can cut out paper hearts for Valentines and apply glitter without instructions, thanks.

* Full instructions for original/unusual ideas only. These are good as is but get lost among pages of "tie balloons to chairs and hang streamers."

* A feature on events that Pippa actually made special. In her Guardian article, she mentioned throwing a white-clothing-only party, a Scandinavian-themed party, and others. Why aren't those in the book? We want to read about how she *actually* parties, not how she wants the little people, I mean readers, to party.

* A smattering of only the most special and personal recipes. This is the Internet age after all. Does Nigella Lawson or Ina Garten already supply a recipe for it? Free? Online? Then we don't need to read yours unless it's something amazing.

* Finally, suggestions for how to develop new traditions. For people who aren't interested in a Burns Night, why not suggest choosing a beloved writer from your own culture and planning some complementary dishes to serve alongside a fireside reading? What else can go in a Christmas cracker? What other traditional dances should we try to revive?

Overall, I enjoyed parts of this book, but I finished feeling a bit duped. Maybe Pippa truly spends her life as a character in a 19th century novel, complete with reel dancing, lawn games, and bicycling to picnic locales, never a cell phone or computer in sight. I'm suspicious there's a lot more yachting, skiing, Prada shopping, and hobnobbing, though. Too bad. The truth would have made for a better book.

A comprehensive guide for home parties

Ms. Middleton's book does an excellent job of providing accessible recipes and easy to make crafts for any reader who is planning a home party.

This purpose of this book is to help a host plan a fun and thoughtful event for a small group of close friends. This book is not a blueprint for multi million dollar events, and it is clearly presented to be no such book. It is, however, my new go-to reference for any seasonal gathering I host.

One major benefit of this book is that is considers both children's and adult's activities ideas. Since most families consist of members ranging in age, it is very appropriate for family party planning.

Everything from the photography to the paper choice has been carefully curated in this book. Excellent book, I can't wait for a follow-up from Ms. Middleton.

How to put a middle ages murder mystery together.

This slim book, of only 80 pages, takes you behind the scenes and into the mind of an author. It shows that a "real world" was created in "The name of the rose" with all of the history, geography and even weather in the proper place for the story to happen. The style is light and playful talking about how many steps are needed for some dialog to take place rather than explaining what each character's motivation is. It gives a glimpse of how much enjoyment must come from actually creating a novel

A breath of fresh air

Dare I say that I enjoyed this slim paperback more than I did the novel itself! Perhaps I am one of the unsophisticated readers the author alludes to at one point. A must for any student of the novel form. Thank you Professor Eco for a chance to peek into the pathways of your mind.Incidentally the edition I've read goes by the title "Reflections on The name of..." Also read "Six walks in the fictional woods."

There are some insights into the novel, and it is well worth the read

Like any good semiotician (read, basically, postmodernist), Umberto Eco tries to tell you something by not really telling you anything, as if being inscrutable were a virtue. At least with Eco, he will sometimes trot out what he's really thinking, and he is witty and entertaining. (Compare by reading Michel Foucault, where inscrutable is raised to a cult, or just a cruel joke.) There are some insights into the novel, and it is well worth the read, either separate, as here, or as a proper postscript in newer editions, usually paperback, of "The Name of the Rose."

A very well written book on Redicision Therapy

Redicision Therapy is a powerful, little known technique that can help patients make lasting changes in their lives. In the age of one size fits all therapies, Redicision therapy integrates the most effective techniques from CBT, Transactional Analysis and Gestalt. This book is written by the leading practitioners for the therapist that is interested I'm this practical yet effective system. Highly recommended.

Required reading by my supervisor. A bit hard to follow. Starts similar to solution focused therapy but then veres off with lingo not learned in my masters. "Tourist contracts etc." Rereading it to try to figure it out better.

In this book, Steve Pope gives witness to the power of God's love in lives that are models for all of us....once I started reading it, it was difficult to put down.
