A good primer on mobile commerce experiences

This book is a primer on building a mobile commerce experience for designers, developers and product managers. It shows the audience how to meet the challenges in mobile commerce through user experience best practices. It covers major mobile payment frameworks including NFC, cloud and closed loop, and examines the pros and cons of popular payment apps such as Google Wallet, Isis, Square and PayPal. It also explains how to design efficient POS interactions using NFC, QR or geolocations and how to build trust into the mobile payments. Walk-throughs and demos of mobile payment interactions including both successful and unsuccessful scenarios are also provided. Payment flow basics + incorporating other conveniences that can fuel further growth in mobile wallet app usage / adoption

This well written primer goes over some good but basic principles for designing payment flows in mobile wallet apps to make them as secure and seamless as possible for the consumer / shopper. The author provides useful graphics and screen shots of existing consumer-focused mobile wallet apps (such as those from Google, Starbucks, and LevelUp) to illustrate the points he's making regarding "good" and "not-so-good" user interface and payment flow "features", and also discusses the pro's and con's of supporting technologies such as NFC (Near Field Communication), bar- or QR- codes, and geolocation.

The discussion then moves to a prognostication on interesting ways mobile wallet apps can be extended in the future, all involving integration with several other services to provide even more conveniences for and handy information to a consumer / shopper. Overall, a very good and informative read.

Understand the numbers - Make better decisions...

I do have a few years (decades) of experience in the field - and many moons ago I completed most of the coursework for Ph.d. in accounting before deciding academia was not where I wanted to be. I taught the subject at the University level for more than 5 years and now train on this subject internationally. My background also includes working as an auditor and many years wearing the corporate controllers hat. I say this because I want to make clear that this book is not just for beginners, or people without a background in the field.

I recommend this book to everyone. Accounting and finance are not easy subjects especially if you jump in and start with the technical aspects of it. Put simply the better you understand the numbers - the better your business decisions will be. I view this book as providing an excellent foundation - the more you build your core knowledge of the subject the better. Remember the key in business is making better business decisions - don't be overly impressed by people who can spout GAAP at you with in terms you don't understand. The real experts can, and should, be able to translate the rules in a fashion that aids in understanding (1) why the rule is there in the first place, and (2) how it impacts you business and the decisions it makes.

This book is written in a fashion that will not put even non-accountants to sleep and it paints enough pictures with examples of accounting misdeeds to keep it interesting - and to really drive home how seemingly innocuous (in some cases) changes to how transactions are recorded and paint a very different picture of the health of an organization.

If you are in business / work - do yourself, your future and your business a favor by increasing your understanding of the numbers. This book is a great place to start....

Must read for all employees at all levels...

i don't normally write reviews but i have to say this is the best financial book i've ever read...i have spent the past 15 or so years at the coo level with finance reporting to me...and while i'm financially savvy, i have no formal financial education...i'm a believer that finance, like any profession or industry, gets bogged down in its own set of acronyms and language...that in and of itself creates the silos too often found in organizations...sales has it, marketing has it, hr has it, etc...etc...

i always try to break down barriers and most of my time is spent as a translator...truth be told, i've always struggled with translating the financial lingo...this book did it for me and has helped me paint a picture and tell the story behind it so everyone understands...

kudos to the authors!!!

Best place to start your finance education!

Great book to introduce you to the key concepts of finance, as they apply to every person in a company. If you're working in finance, you likely already know this information, but if you're in any other department, it is the perfect book. Easy to read, easy to understand, and I have been able to apply the ideas right away. I wish this was the introductory text in MBA programs - great place to start, as finance is, more than anything, a language. I am in sales and found the ideas a great reminder of how to position the financial value of by products. I encourage anyone who wants to get ahead in their job to read this, and then think about your company and how to apply the ideas. In this day and age, financial intelligence is critical to getting ahead!

Judge this FAR AIM by its cover, actually looks quite nice with that Cirrus. Wait till you open it.

I can't believe that there is yet another sequel to the FAR AIM series! Any pilot will find joy being buried in the regulations.

A secondary feature to this book, is that it serves as a chock when you need it. No 5x5 or 6x6 tire will roll over this thing.

In summary, dual purpose FAR AIM 2016, nothing more exciting.

I own both kindle and paper versions. As exceptionally good navigation is organized in the paper book, as terribly bad it is in the kindle version. Something you don't expect from a digital product. No hyperlinks, the table of contents is only high-level. To find a paragraph you have to open the part overview, flip though several pages to find the paragraph number, then search for that number, and scroll through few pages of search results to finally get to that page. One obvious advantage of the kindle version is you can always have it handy, but don't expect that you can find anything quickly.

The Most Important Piece of Literature since the Ten Commandments.

I have recently picked up the latest in the FAR/AIM series and find myself at the usual cross roads of edge of my seat suspense and mind bending insanity. Last years 2015 FAR AIM was one of the biggest hits in literature this century, so this book had a lot to live up to. We find ourselves where we left off last time questioning things such as why we chose this career, and why does the publisher of this series enjoy tormenting its readers. Twists and turns page to page. Action, suspense, romance. More emotional turmoil awaits readers who bravely dive into this great book. It's one to keep on the mantle for years to come. I find that this book is best read by the fireplace accompanied with fine wine.

Throughout my travels as a corporate developer, professional instructor, and consultant and mentor, I've found that software developers everywhere consistently struggle with the same fundamental challenges. In essence, these challenges are each centered on software design. Whether accommodating scope creep or managing a constant evolution in requirements when developing a new system, or attempting to add new features into an existing system, the architectural mechanisms utilized in each will be vital in determining the success or failure of the software development effort. Systems that support change will grow with the businesses they support; those that do not will inevitably crumble beneath their own weight, eventually requiring a new development effort.

On a theoretical front, if one were to consider a software system with an architecture that is ultimately flexible, the possibilities associated with this system would be endless. Simply plugging new components into the system could easily accommodate for changing requirements and scope creep. Older rules no longer supported could be dealt with by removing those components from the system. While theoretically this Promised Land may exist, pragmatically speaking it is almost impossible to achieve. That isn't to say, however, that we shouldn't strive to achieve it. By putting forth the effort, we are most assured of making it one step closer.

Taking this next step is not easy. It involves changes throughout the entire software development life cycle. By utilizing today's best of breed technologies, methodologies, and principles we have the set of complementary tools before us to take our efforts to this next level. Using these complementary tools creates a development effort with an implicit system of checks and balances. These help ensure us that our systems will, in fact, be more flexible and resilient to change.

In The Timeless Way of Building, Christopher Alexander discusses an aesthetically pleasing feeling associated with architecture called "The Quality Without a Name." He describes various aspects of a garden, a storefront, or a room, which creates a feeling of warmth. The cause of this feeling cannot be attributed to any singular aspect of the surroundings, but is ultimately the result of how each atomic element works together to create this quality. This holds true with software architecture as well. In my discussions with students and clients, I often times ask if they have had similar feelings when developing software. Most developers can relate to situations where they've looked at their work and have felt proud of what they've done. They see that the system is flexible, performs well, and is bug-free. They have achieved Quality Without a Name in software development.

Many times, after having this dialogue with developers and discussing the technologies, methodologies, and principles that can contribute to achieving this certain degree of quality, I've been asked to provide resources that present these complementary technologies in a structured format. While there are many such resources available, none discusses each as a set of complementary technologies in a single work. In fact, while these technologies do complement each other, they also force us to work in multiple, complex environments, including modeling using UML, applying object-oriented design principles, and programming in Java. In this book, we document and describe these complementary technologies, and how they can be used within the context of software process to help us develop higher-quality systems, ultimately achieving that pinnacle of software development, The Quality Without a Name.

This work documents more than five years of enterprise-wide development experience. It contains input from literally hundreds of developers I've instructed and worked with throughout those years when teaching and applying these concepts. It answers the most frequently asked questions of the developers I've encountered, in a format that I've found to be understandable by those developers. The approach taken in these answers is one of clear and concise direction, followed by elaboration on how various technologies can be used together to realize resilient results. It is my desire that the information contained within this book can save you both time and energy in your development efforts. Excellent book. Gives a step by step approach to OOD.

This is the best book I have read by far on OO design. The author covers several of the patterns in the GoF Design Patterns book, and gives an in depth insight into how to use them.
If you are like me and find yourself saying: "I understand inheritance, polymorphism, and java syntax, but how do I put all of these things together to achieve flexible design and reusability??", this book is definitely for you.
This author gives a clear, step by step approach to teach you how to identify objects within specifications (use cases), shows you how to identify their collaborations, and shows you how to structure the objects through UML. He shows you what good design is and how to avoid bad design. Throughout the book, he describes where and when to use Java concepts such as inheritance, and where and when NOT to use them. The book is complete with examples, diagrams, and code.
I would highly recommend this book for intermediate and expert levels.

If you CAN read it's a good book...

Whilst not perfect (an it is a bit wordy), this is a good overview of a difficult topic which is too often overlooked by other books. It isn't as trendy as XP (which this book mentions in passing) or future-perfect at AOP but the use of UML with a robust process for developing applications such as that espoused by this book will keep you out of a whole lot of trouble. Where this book goes wrong, in my opinion, is the overcomplication in the terminology used. The processes described are fairly simple in themselves - it's just the way they're explained which isn't. In short, a good technical editor would've helped this book immensely. If you're interested in a simpler (but less process oriented solution), try Enterprise Java with UML by CT Arrington which is, so far the best book on this subject.

Grade 6-8 - McArthur opens this retrospective with an account of the January 1991 air war on Baghdad. She then discusses how the artificial divisions and borders imposed by the British during its colonial control of the region created the instability that led to the rise of Saddam Hussein. She also discusses the dictator's invasion and occupation of Kuwait, the American response and immediate defense of Saudi Arabia, and the first Bush administration's efforts to create an international coalition to oust Hussein from Kuwait. The remaining chapters discuss the war and its aftermath. McArthur is objective about the war and its uncertain resolution, and her inclusion of the stories of American men and women in the service will help students see the human side of the conflict. Maps help students follow the action, but the average-quality, black-and-white photos add little. This book adequately covers the war, but it contains many details of troop movements and military action that will not encourage general reading. While its coverage is not as comprehensive as Rodney P. Carlisle's Persian Gulf War (Facts on File, 2003), its lower reading level is more suited to middle school students, making it a good report choice for libraries that need additional material on the first Persian Gulf War. - Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO
