About the Author
Lynn R. Marotz, Ph.D., R.N., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Life at the University of Kansas. She also serves as the Associate Director of the university's Child Development Center. Ms. Marotz is co-chair of the Higher Education Consortium on Early Childhood Education. She is a member of the Stakeholder's Advisory Committee/Early Childhood Council, Kansas State Board of Education. She is also a member of the Kansas Early Care and Education Professional Development Initiative, as well as a member of the Early Childhood Professional Preparation Initiative. She is a council member for the Gateway's to Early Childhood Careers Project and serves as a board member for the Douglas County Child Development Association (NAEYC Affiliate). In 1998, she was a visiting scholar at Arizona State University and is a former finalist for University Employee of the Year (1997).

Eileen K. Allen, Professor Emerita, University of Kansas, spent 30 years as a professor of child development and early childhood education at the University of Washington in Seattle and the University of Kansas at Lawrence. Throughout her career, Eileen was active in national and international organizations focused on the development of young children and their families, including NAEYC, the Commission on Early Childhood Teacher Education, the Council for Exceptional Children, and the National Association of Early Childhood Teacher Educators (NAECTE).

Everything that Dali did was "for effect," to be sure -- but he could pull it off so well, much of the time, that those words are not a slam at all. Once in a while, I would see him at the bar of the St. Regis Hotel in New York, staring at a lava lamp. Around that time, I also bought this remarkable book -- it really is a cookbook in that some dishes do not require the more exotic ingredients such as peacock! But the art by Dali in presenting everything is a genuine delight -- decadent in many ways and still with occasional touches of playfulness bordering on the innocent.

Peacock! Yes, there is a recipe from Maxim's for peacock -- which was part of Maxim's menu for the main banquet at the celebration of the 2,500th anniversary of Cyrus the Great and the Persian Empire! This was staged at a tent city built out at Persepolis. The Shah of Iran, who would be overthrown in 1979, wanted to make a connection between himself and the ancient Persian Empire. Of course, he sat on the "Peacock Throne," a it was called. And they served all these roasted peacocks! How does the line go about "cooking your own goose"?

When I was looking for the book, I allready knew it had to be something special.When I received it, this was confirmed, first by the state of the book.It looked very well, also the packaging for shipping was allright.For me, having this book, opens lots of possibilities. Till now I only glace at it, several times a day, being busy with other things, but this is the wayit works with me.

The only thing I didn't expect, was the costs of 22 euro tax I had to pay(even though, the book's worth it)because at the shop they saig it would be nothing.

I am very happy to have had the possibility of buying this book in this way at Cherrybooks.They handled it perfectly.

About the Author

Luke Humphrey is head coach of Hansons Coaching Services and a member of the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project. Humphrey holds a BA in Exercise Science from Central Michigan University, an MS in Exercise Science from Oakland University, and is a Certified Clinical Exercise Specialist with the American College of Sports Medicine. Humphrey is also a professional distance runner with top 10 and podium finishes in major U.S. running races from 10K to marathon, as well as two-time qualifier for the Olympic Trials. He is author with Kevin and Keith Hanson of Hansons Marathon Method and Hansons Half-Marathon Method.

Marathon PR achieved - worth a try but it is quite a commitment

Having run regularly for over 6 years, I have had the opportunity to compete in 10 marathons and tried a number of marathon plans. During this time I've tried the free 18-week plans available on the internet; run less, run faster; and I have even worked with a live coach. Up until yesterday, the only plan that helped me to achieve the most success was the one led by the live coach but after going back to him for my next marathon, I definitely found that there were limitations to how much he could help me.

Now, I have to give the Hanson's Marathon Method it's due. Yesterday, the beginner's plan helped me to achieve an all-time marathon PR by nearly 8 minutes (sub-4 hours - finally!) at the recent Chicago Marathon. I had my doubts at first but the formula is pretty straight forward - run a ton (for me it was about 850 miles logged over a 20-week period). It gets a little more complicated than that, but that's the gist.

I recommend this plan to anyone who is looking for an effective way to get better at marathon running. It covers all aspects of training and preparing for the marathon, so if anything, it is a great reference. Personally, I look forward to tackling the advanced plan (the plan calls for nearly 10-25% more milage than the beginners plan) for my next fall marathon. As with any endeavor, the amount you put in is equal to what you get out of it. I probably followed 90% of the beginner plan to the "t" but life got in the way in the last two weeks before the Marathon and I think that may have negatively affected my results - I think I could have run significantly faster.

This Plan Works

I'm an experienced marathoner (14 previously) who was looking for a structured training plan to follow for the first time. With this plan, my PR went from 4:20 in March (Atlanta) to 3:51 in October (Chicago).

The plan itself is definitely a time commitment--you should be able to schedule in runs 6 days a week. At the same time, it's flexible--moving the workouts/rest day around during the week is possible with a little planning, and missing a day here and there isn't the end of the world. I liked the speed and strength workouts in addition to the tempo and long runs which provide a nice change of pace (pun a little intended), and I could definitely feel the benefits of these workouts on race day. I think the biggest strength of this program is the mental training that comes with the physical training. Each mile seems shorter when you're out there almost every day, and once you've made it through tough training workouts, you know you can make it through the few hours on race day.

I didn't use every part of this book, but it is comprehensive. When I wanted more information on a workout, it was there. There is also plenty of information beyond the plan such as warm-ups, stretching, race planning, diet, shoes, and much more.

I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who is willing to put in the time and hard work for their marathon goals.

I am a pretty experienced runner with a lot of 5K and 10K ...

I am a pretty experienced runner with a lot of 5K and 10K races under my belt. However, before picking up this training program, I had only run one marathon a few years ago in a time of 3:17. For some time now, I've been interested in taking my marathon time to the next level and possibly qualifying for Boston. I heard a lot about the Hanson Method from fellow runners who all had great results using this program so I decided to give it a try.

I followed the advanced program religiously for the full 18 weeks. It was very intense and tiring (being tired all the time is an important part of the Hanson Method). The intensity of the program is defiantly not for everyone. The advanced program requires you to run 6 days a week and averages between 45-55 miles per week but its worth the effort. I was able to cut my marathon PR from 3:17 to 3:03 and qualify for Boston! Overall I would recommend this program for anyone that wants to improve their marathon performance and learn the science and methodology of marathon training. There are some downsides to this program though that I think should be considered:

1) This program is definitely a time commitment. You will basically all you will be doing for 18 weeks is running. Your will have to schedule everyting around running. It is very intense. Be aware of this.

2) The program is very rigorous and precise. This is good for a disciplined systematic training approach but its also very unforgiving of downtime because of injury or even if you have a bad day and don't quite hit your pace target for that run. I had a few days when I couldn't quite hit my pace or distance target an I believe that had an effect on my overall performance at the marathon. And this leads me to 3...

3) A big part of this pgroam is the fact that the long runs max out at 16 miles. In fact, the program is famous for this apparently unorthodox approach. The book contains a lot of information about the logic behind the 16 mile long runs so I won't get into that here. However, because the long runs are only 16 miles, the program assumes that the runner does everything in the program exactly as described. If you have a bad day and don't hit your pace or distance goal it will affect your overall performance quite a bit. Also, I found that during the marathon, my body defiantly felt tired after the 16th mile and my splits were consistent until mile 16.

Overall this is an excellent training program especially if you are not that experienced with marathon training and want to learn what marathon training is all about. However, there are some downsides and maybe after following the program religiously the first time, it may be appropriate to make modifications for subsequent marathons.

Every Music Teacher NEEDS to read this

Teaching music with passion was the just the pick-me up I needed. If you're even considering this book, chances are you're a music educator that is spread a bit to thin but loves their "kids" (even when you don't always like them..)After reading this book I have vowed to read it every March, when june seems oh so far away and april vacation is but a distant memory. Teaching music with passion is filled with awesome practical information some of which served as a great refresher course and some that inspired me to try new things with my high school band. It's also filled with countless anticdotes that entertain but most importantly tell a story that is likely to remind you how much you love teaching and why you chose this profession in the first place.

If you can do what this man teachs--wow!

I just returned from a concert conducted by Peter Boonshaft. It was an all-county band concert (high-school aged musicians chosen for participation through an audition process) where roughly 125 students meet and work with a guest conductor for three days then present four or five pieces in-concert. (Henrico County, VA)

Wow. I have seen plenty of student concerts in the years my son has participated in our county's first-class music program, but, from the moment Boonshaft raised his baton, I knew I was witnessing something extraordinary.

If this book helps you communicate ten percent as effectively as Dr. Boonshaft communicated with these students and this audience, it is well worth twice the price. The students were truly, truly inspired and the audience was simply spellbound. Three standing ovations later, I realized I had witnessed a rare professional who is so confident about what he does that he transends self and is able to help those around him to experience his passion themselves--amazing.

Extremely relevant to today!

I actually have a different printing of this book, but it has seriously affected my world view, as it did for Mahatma Gandhi.

A small sampling of Tolstoy's insights to Christianity from this work, and how it is extremely relevant to modern society and current politics is the subject of the second half of one of my recent blog posts here: [...] As I mention in the post, the historical interpretations of scripture as presented by Tolstoy seem to match expert knowledge of the period, as the PhD Archeologist I met in Rome explained to me.

This book will change how you view and understand Christianity. Or, it did for me at least. But then again I was raised as a Right Winged, Home Schooled, Christian American Republican. Prepare to have much of that like completely shattered beyond hope of repair as Tolstoy analyzes the original meaning and understanding of many of Christs teachings, without the misrepresentations of the church. As a bonus: Gain valuable counter points for the so called biblical literalists you may run into from time to time. (Even more of which can be found elsewhere on my blog.)

Anyway: Tolstoy gets 5 stars from me! And presumably Gandhi also, given he modeled his work in large part on Tolstoy's explanation of Christs teachings from this volume. So if you don't believe me, take Gandhi's word for it!

what he puts forth in this excellent exposition of the sermon on the mount is both ...

While I don't agree with all of Tolstoy's conclusions (his rejection of the supernatural aspects of Christianity), what he puts forth in this excellent exposition of the sermon on the mount is both compatible with orthodox (traditional, not the denomination) Christianity, and utterly revolutionary. Anyone who reads this and is not convicted by Jesus's words to "resist not evil" simply does not have ears to hear. Tolstoy speaks with prophetic insight and truly lay's out what a kingdom lifestyle truly looks like. I would recommend this book to anyone who can take time to digest what is written within.
Between this and "The Kingdom of God is Within You" is what transformed me into a christian anarchist (really more along the lines of traditional anabaptist). I encountered these works while attending a charismatic bible college which pushed dominion theology very strongly, with Tolstoy's help, the contrast between dominion theology and the doctrine of Jesus became as clear as night and day. This books should be assigned to every student of theology if nothing more than a counter-voice to American evangelical conservatism.

Good reference, but not a good teaching book

This book is a good reference for the Discrete Cosine Transform. The mathematics is only moderately difficult, and should provide little difficulty for a talented engineer graduate, say.

And yet I can't give this book a great review. It's all rather clinical, with little attempt to provide overview or insight. One just doesn't come away terribly enlightened.

The main reason provided as to why the DCT might be better than the DFT in some instances is that it is a more compact encoder of Markov sequences. Great, but what does this mean in practise? Well, the authors give many applications, but they are dealt with briefly, with little insight, and in a encyclopedic manner. Better would have been a few simple applications, done in more detail, where the authors made crystal clear why the DCT is the tool for the job.

I was hoping to come away with an in-depth understanding as to the properties of the DCT, where it's best applied, and why. I was disappointed.

This book is so far the most complete reference of the transform "discrete cosine transform". We can see the author's time and effort by only looking at the reference section (more then 200+ references). This book outlines different algorithms for computing 1D, 2D DCT, IDCT, some includings FORTRAN codes. Without this book, collecting all the existing journals about DCT will probably takes several months. This book is good for novices about DCT, as well as good for experts.
